Company History

From the needs of two local timber sawing firms unable to get their saws re-sharpened correctly and on time, John Keen and Co., Saw millers and Timber Merchants of Colesbourne, and Tewkesbury Box Co., employed a Saw Doctor and set him up in the old railway station ticket office building in Tewkesbury in 1961. Seeing the potential of this enterprise, John Keen bought sole ownership of the Saw Sharpening Company, and took out a small van to joinery and timber companies extending the good service that he had needed in his own business. Soon building up various van runs, John employed a driver.

In December 1970, John and Company moved into purpose built premises just a few hundred yards away on the new industrial estate, and Mrs June Keen established full time office facilities. In 1975 their son, Bruce (now Managing Director) joined and worked his way through the workshop learning saw sharpening skills as well as qualifying as a Saw Doctor. In 1976 Alan Murphy (now Director) joined as an apprentice Saw Doctor, and in 1977 son Richard joined. Together they extended saw blade and tooling sales and machinery for woodworking and metal sawing. In 1982 a new 2 floor showroom was built. Bruce and Alan now run the company, backed by a very strong sales and service team, and over a period of time have introduced new services, such as specialised tooling, safety training and bespoke machine maintenance contracts.
